It’s that time of year again! Between pumpkin-flavored everything, lots of candy, cozy sweatshirts, and Halloween decor, Spooky Season is officially upon us! However, no Spooky Sseason is complete without a couple of new horror movies to sink our fangs into, and we have the perfect list of upcoming ones to check out. From gruesome gore to supernatural scaries and even a murder mystery, these 5 films set to hit theaters this Fall will be the perfect late-night outing for you and all your ghoul-friends!
1. The Nun II (In Theatres Now)
Don’t spill your popcorn at a jumpscare during this movie! The Nun II serves as a sequel to The Nun (2018) and is the ninth(!) installment in The Conjuring Cinematic Universe. Set 4 years after the first film, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) again comes face-to-face with the evil demonic force, Valak the Nun, this time at a boarding school in France. Jonas Bloquet is also reprising his role as Frenchie, with Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell joining the cast as well. Directed by Michael Chaves and written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper, The Nun II is currently spooking audience members everywhere in a theatre near you!
2. A Haunting in Venice (September 15)
Whodunnit? A Haunting in Venice is one part supernatural and one part murder mystery, which we think is a perfect combo! Directed by Kenneth Branagh, Michael Green's script for the film is an adaptation from the play Hallowe’en Party, written by the legendary Agatha Christie. The film also serves as a sequel for Death on The Nile (2022) and is the third film overall with Branagh himself reprising his role as Belgian detective Hercule Poriot. This time, the famous detective is retired but most solve the murder of a guest at a seance he’s attended! The film also stars Michelle Yeoh, Kyle Allen, Camille Cottin, Jamie Dornan, Tina Fey, and Jude Hill. If this trailer is anything to go by, we just know we’ll be on the edge of our seats the entire time!
3. Saw X (September 29)
Wanna play a game… or see a movie? Saw X is, as the title suggests, the 10th overall installment in the Saw franchise and serves as a direct sequel to the first Saw (2004) and prequel to Saw II (2005). The film follows the infamous John Kramer traveling to Mexico searching for a miracle cure to his cancer. After realizing the operation he was going through with is actually a scam targeting vulnerable individuals, Kramer finds new purpose, returning to put con artists in his signature traps. Talk about getting on someone’s bad side! Directed by Kevin Greutert, written by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger, and starring Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith, Saw X will soon be slicing open a theater near you!
4. The Exorcist: Believer (October 6)
What a lovely day for an exorcism… movie! The Exorcist: Believer is the 6h installment in The Exorcist franchise and serves as a direct sequel to the very first Exorcist film, which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year! In this film, the parents of two young demonically-possessed girls set out to find someone who had a similar experience. Directed by David Gordon Green and written by Green, Peter Sattler, Scott Teems, and Danny McBride (yes, that Danny McBride!), The Exorcist: Believer stars Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, and Jennifer Nettles, with Ellen Burstyn reprising her iconic role as Chris MacNeil. It is also the first of 3 planned new Exorcist films, with the second set to release in 2025. We can’t wait to see this one, and will be watching with anticipation (probably through our fingers)!
5. Five Nights At Freddy’s (October 27)
It’s as creepy as it looks! Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Five Nights at Freddy’s follows a troubled security guard named Mike Schmidt, who accepts a night time job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Spending late nights at this abandoned, once-successful family entertainment center, Schmidt soon realizes that the 4 animatronic mascots -- Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy -- can move and kill anyone that is still there after midnight! Directed by Emma Tammi and written by Tammi, Scott Cawthon, Seth Cuddeback, Tyler MacIntyre, and Chris Lee Hill, this film stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard.
We are so pumped about these scary flicks and hope your Spooky Season is complete while watching them! Happy haunting!
