Famous for using fashion as a way to make political statements, Porter did just that in his red and pink gender-fluid suit at this weekend’s Tony Awards. The hand-sewn Elizabethan gown was custom-made by New York label Celestino Couture and was created from the recycled velvet curtain that separated Porter from his audience during the entirety go his run in the musical Kinky Boots. The pomegranate curtain served as a sort of good luck charm for Porter. Not only was it with him for roughly 1,500 performances of his Tony-winning musical, but it also graced him as a first time presenter at the Tony Awards. As exorbitant as it was, an extra dash of pizazz was added by including over 30,000 Swarovski crystals. This wasn’t just any suit, however. His chromatic costume was intentionally designed to represent the female uterus and was direct support towards women’s reproductive rights.
