4 Things That Have Us Royally Stoked For Disney's ‘Secret Society of Second-Born Royals’!

Written by Andi Ortiz. Published: September 10 2020

What happens after a fairytale ends? For Disney, endings simply mean the start of new adventures. In Disney’s Descendants trilogy, for instance, we learned all about the lives of the children of Disney’s most famous villains.

This month, we get to meet a whole new crop of Disney royalty. This time, they aren’t the offspring of Disney royalty, but rather the siblings. In Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, we’ll meet five new royals: Princess Sam, Princess January, Prince Matteo, Prince Tuma, and Princess Roxana. Each one has a special ability, and together the quintet is tasked with protecting the kingdom when a dangerous inmate escapes. There’s a lot to look forward to with this sci-fi adventure, so let’s break it down.

1. Professor Skylar Astin

We’ve gotten very used to seeing Skylar Astin as the comedic relief in most projects. And, to be fair, Astin has said that his character will definitely bring some humor to this film. But with Secret Society, Astin is also becoming the mentor. As Professor James Morrow, Skylar Astin will help the kids learn and hone their powers and take down the evil that is facing the kingdom. Astin has described his character as “a Professor Xavier of sorts.”

As a bonus, Professor Morrow’s second-born power is the power to multiply. So we’re getting more than one Skylar Astin on screen at a time. 2020 had to pull through for us in some way, right?

2. New Disney Royalty

When it comes to Disney royalty, the roster is pretty familiar. We know all about Cinderella, Mulan, Belle, Jasmine, and the others. But with Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, Disney is introducing a whole new set of characters living in an entirely new kingdom called Illyria.

There’s no way to know what to expect; there are no pre-determined favorites based on parentage – fans simply get to dive into a whole new Disney realm. These royals will have an entirely blank slate. Illyria could be darker than the kingdoms we’ve known, it could be futuristic, it could be anything!

3. Disney’s First Black Prince

In introducing new royals, Disney is also making history with Secret Society of Second-Born Royals. In his role as Prince Tuma, Niles Fitch – who fans have come to love as Teenaged Randall on NBC’s “This Is Us” – will officially be Disney’s first Black prince in a live-action film.

Prince Tuma is described as a charismatic guy who’s vital to the second-born team, but has a bit of an ego problem. Fitch’s casting is a huge step forward in representation for Disney, and we can’t wait to see what he does with the character!

4. Powers

In the kingdom of Illyria, the second-born children of royal families have a gene that gives them superpowers. Right now, we don’t know much about these powers. We know that Skylar Astin’s character can multiply and, based on the movie’s trailer, it seems super-sight and super-hearing may come into play for some characters as well.

But for the most part, the abilities of these new royals remain a mystery. How exactly they’ll use these powers to save the kingdom is anyone’s guess, and there’s a lot of room to play in that. We’ve got an exciting adventure ahead of us!
