4 Reasons To Watch Netflix's "I Am Not Okay with This"!

Written by Sarrah Wolfe. Published: March 05 2020

If you haven’t already fallen in love with Sophia Lillis, you’re about to.

The up-and-coming starlet, who stepped onto the scene in the remake of It, is making an even bigger name for herself in the new Netflix series, "I Am Not Okay with This". She stars alongside her It co-star Wyatt Olef and newcomer Sofia Bryant in a Carrie-meets-"Euphoria" teen drama that follows 17-year-old Sydney “Syd” Novak as she discovers that she has telekinesis.

If a promising cast and superpowers aren’t enough to reel you in, here’s 4 other reasons to check out the series!

1. It nails the difficulties of being an awkward teenager.

Syd deals with a lot of depression and anxiety after her father’s death.

Maybe not all of us have had that exact experience, but there are some more universal struggles that I’m sure any one can relate to, like the weird changes your body goes through (whether it be developing superpowers you can’t control or pimples on your thighs), growing apart from your best friend, a tense relationship with your mother, and navigating high school parties when no one even knows your name.

2. It’s backed by an incredible soundtrack.

The show features an array of music from all decades and genres.

What hooked me in the opening scene (besides the blood-drenched Syd) was The Kinks’s “I’m Not Like Everybody Else”, a personal favorite. The music only got better the more I watched, with artists like '60s icon Donovan, grungy surf rockers The Pixies, and the classic New Wave band Echo & the Bunnymen.

If you’re looking for some new music to add to your Spotify playlist, get your Shazam! ready because you’re sure to discover something on the show.

3. It’s got all the fun of modern technology with all the best style of the '70s and '80s.

There’s a heavy influence of the '70s and '80s in the production design of the show, with nods to film classics like Carrie and The Breakfast Club. Aesthetically, the whole town is still stuck in 1979. Syd’s love interest, Stanley, even has a VHS collection.

But they aren’t totally stuck in the past. The teens still have all the fun and difficulties of today’s iPhones and computers.

4. Let’s face it - we all wish we had superpowers like Syd.

I think we can all agree that having telekinetic powers would be really freaking cool.

The hard part, as Syd demonstrates, would be controlling them. But since you won’t be getting superpowers anytime soon, you’ll just have to watch the show and live vicariously through Syd!
