Sam Smith in recovery after surgery

British singer Sam Smith has assured fans he is recovering well following his throat surgery on Thursday (14May15).

The pop star went under the knife at a medical facility in the U.S. after suffering a vocal cord hemorrhage which prompted him to halt his tour of Australia and Asia and cancel a slew of concert dates.

Smith kept fans updated prior to the procedure, revealing his mother had jetted from Britain to the U.S. to be by his side, and he even snapped a picture of himself in his hospital bed.

After the surgery, Smith returned to Twitter.com to describe his experiences with post-operative painkillers, writing, "Just woken up from op (operation). I'm... on pain killers and listening to Whitney Houston hahahahaha..."

He also added a picture of himself sitting in a wheelchair, wearing dark glasses, with a smiling nurse by his side, and added the caption "Flying."
