Perrie Edwards' mother: 'Zayn Malik proposed on Sunday'

Perrie Edwards' mother has confirmed the pop star is engaged to marry Zayn Malik after the One Direction heartthrob proposed on Sunday (18Aug13).

The Little Mix singer sparked rumors about an impending wedding when she was spotted wearing a sparkling new ring on her left hand as she accompanied Malik to the premiere of the band's new documentary in London on Tuesday night (20Aug13).

The stars have yet to comment on the story, but Edwards' mother Debbie Dufty has now confirmed the engagement.

She tells Britain's Real Radio North East, "Yes it is, it's true. They got engaged on Sunday and it was absolutely lovely. It's wonderful because Zayn is absolutely gorgeous and Perrie loves him to pieces. It's just perfect. They just get on so well and they understand each other so it's just fabulous."

Dufty goes on to reveal her daughter does not want a "long engagement" but the stars will struggle to fit a wedding into their busy schedules.

She adds, "I said (to Edwards) 'How long's it gonna be (until the wedding)?' and she said, 'Well I don't want a long (engagement) but I don't want it to too quick either'... 1D are just massive and they've got things to do between this year and 2014/15 and Little Mix are the same, they are out of the country a lot of the time... (But) I think they will eventually get together and set the date."
