One Direction have warned fans to stay vigilant as Internet fraudsters have allegedly been tricking devotees with a fake voting scam ahead of the upcoming BRIT Awards.

The teen idols are nominated in the British Group category at the Wednesday night (20Feb13) show, but the band has told fans not to fall for schemes which urge them to cast a ballot for the prizegiving.

They have reiterated that the award is not decided by a public vote and suggested fans are being targeted by online con artists.

A post on the band's official Twitter.com page, reads, "Important safety message! There's NO public vote for BRITs Group at the BRIT Awards - do not click on any sites inviting you to vote!"

The BRIT Awards will be handed out during a ceremony at London's O2 Arena.
