New Doctor Who receives hero's welcome in New York
New Doctor Who Peter Capaldi received a huge vote of confidence from fans of the sci-fi show on Thursday (14Aug14) when he attended a premiere event for the new season.
The Scottish actor, who has taken over Time Lord duties from Matt Smith, joined co-star Jenna Coleman and writer Steven Moffat at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York, and thousands of eager fans were there to greet him.
Capaldi's official debut as the new Doctor, which will hit TV
screens later this month (Aug14), became a hot ticket item when all
900 seats for the premiere screening sold out in less than one
minute.
The actor, who posed for photos with fans on the Tardis-blue
carpet, revealed how he prepared to play an iconic TV character,
explaining, "Once I became the Doctor, I invited Matt to lunch to
discuss the role and he arrived on crutches. I said, 'What happened
to you?' and he said, 'The show, mate'."
He added, "Matt Smith and (former Doctor Who) David Tennant have
both been very kind and helpful to me. I often talk to them and
text them and ask for advice. It's a very small club, we talk about
stuff that only doctors can talk about."
Capaldi made a brief appearance on the BBC's highest-rated series
in November (14) as part of the show's 50th anniversary
episode.
Capaldi and Coleman kicked off the first ever global Doctor Who
tour earlier this month (Aug14) and they will also make stops in
London, Seoul, Sydney, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro to promote
the show.
