Miley Cyrus and Blink-182 honored by PETA

Miley Cyrus and Blink-182 have been honored for their animal rights activism by PETA officials.

The Wrecking Ball singer was named Best Voice for Animals by executives of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)'s youth division peta2 for promoting a vegan lifestyle and animal issues on social media.

She beat the likes of Sia and the Misfits' Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein to win the honor as part of the 11th Annual Libby Awards, "libby" being short for liberation.

Other winners include Blink-182, who were voted the most animal-friendly band of 2016. The group's Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker are both vegans while new member Matt Skiba is a vegetarian.

Miley's partner Liam Hemsworth was also nominated for a Libby Award for Hero of the Year for Animals but he was beaten by Davey Havok from rock band AFI.

"Today’s hottest stars don’t hesitate to take time out from judging a hit television show or dropping a highly anticipated album in order to speak up for animals," peta2 senior director Marta Holmberg said in a statement. "peta2 is recognizing Miley Cyrus, Davey Havok, blink-182, and other celebrities who are encouraging fans to eat vegan, shop cruelty-free, and more.”

Miley turned vegan in 2014 and told Paper magazine she made the decision shortly after her dog Floyd was killed by a coyote. She also told U.S. Jimmy Fallon her pets, which include dogs, fish and a pig, made her think differently.

"One day I went to a sushi restaurant with a few of my friends and they were serving blowfish and I just thought, you know, this is an intelligent animal, and having a pig, it's extremely intelligent," she said.

Liam went vegan in 2015 and he was named PETA's Sexiest Vegan earlier this year (16).
