Margaret Qualley appreciated mum Andie MacDowell's laid-back approach to parenting

Andie Macdowell's daughter Margaret Qualley has spoken about her relaxed upbringing.

The actress and model, who is best known for playing Jill Garvey on HBO TV series The Leftovers, is the youngest child of Andie and her ex-husband, former model Paul Qualley.

In spite of Andie's high-profile career in Hollywood, Margaret reveals she had a rather quiet childhood on a ranch in North Carolina, and her parents were very flexible when it came to parenting.

"It was, 'You want ice cream twice a day? You can have it' and 'You don't have to go to school if you don't want to'. And I was like, 'Yeah I have to,'" she told London's Evening Standard.

While Andie, 59, starred in some of the most popular films of the '90s, Margaret admits that she never watched her hits as a child. And she only got around to seeing 1994's Oscar nominated Four Weddings and a Funeral very recently.

"We didn't grow up watching her movies," the 22-year-old shared. "She made an effort just to be a mom, which I am grateful for."

Margaret launched her career by landing parts in a video campaign for fashion house Kenzo, hit show The Leftovers and 2016 movie The Nice Guys.

She has also recently wrapped on a major role in Netflix supernatural thriller Death Note, and is pleased she's followed a path into show business after previously studying to become a ballerina, which she found to be "really hard".

"They write down everything you eat and use a little roller that pinches you to measure the fat all over your body. Then every semester you get a letter saying either you're too thin or you're OK or you're overweight," she explained.
