Maisie Williams: 'I still haven't read Game of Thrones!'
British actress Maisie Williams has revealed she still hasn't read George R.R. Martin's Game Of Thrones novels, despite starring in the show for five years.
The 19-year-old actress, who has landed her first Emmy nomination for her role as orphan-turned-assassin Arya Stark, confessed to never having read Martin's novels on which the hit HBO show is based.
"When I started, my mom deemed them inappropriate," she laughs.
"But also, at the time, I didn’t really understand the importance
of that in my craft. I was a non-actor, never trained, and I never
really had any passion for reading. I just was Arya when I was
younger, and that’s kind of the way it worked out."
It was recently announced there would be two more seasons of the
fantasy drama show, and Maisie said she would begin reading the
novels once the show had come to an end.
"I brought what I brought to Arya, and I’m thrilled with the
character I’ve strangely created now. It would be amazing to go
back and read them after the fact, and see exactly what she was
supposed to be like," she told Deadline on Monday (15Aug16).
"But I keep thinking how funny it’d be, if someone sees me on the
London Underground reading Game of Thrones!"
Not much is known about the final seasons of the show, apart from
the fact that they will be shorter in length than the previous six
seasons. Despite what may lie in store for her character, Maisie
stressed the hit show needs to end naturally, rather than leaving
fans with a cliffhanger.
“It needs to happen organically. Everything that’s happened in my
career so far has happened really organically, and that’s the thing
I’m going to take with me," she explains. "But when the time is
right, I know I’ll be able, as an actor, to create a new character
and have the confidence to do that."
