La La Land's Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling both receive SAG Awards nods

La La Land co-stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are both in the running for top honors at the 2017 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.


The duo, who star opposite each other in Damien Chazelle's critically acclaimed musical are both nominated in the female and male acting categories which honor outstanding performances in leading roles on Wednesday (14Dec16).


Emma will face a fierce battle for the prize as she's up against Jackie star Natalie Portman (Jackie), Arrival's Amy Adams, Emily Blunt (Girl on the Train) and acting doyenne Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins).


Ryan meanwhile is set to compete with Denzel Washington who is nominated for his role in Fences, a film he also directed, Manchester by the Sea's Casey Affleck, Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) and Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic).


The nominations ceremony was hosted by actress Sophia Bush and the rapper Common at Los Angeles' Pacific Design Center.


The battle in the supporting acting categories look equally competitive, with Fences star Viola Davis taking on Moonlight's Naomie Harris, Nicole Kidman (Lion), Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures).


Moonlight's Mahershala Ali, Hell or High Water's Jeff Bridges, Florence Foster Jenkins' Hugh Grant, Dev Patel (Lion) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson will compete for the male supporting acting honors.


The Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category includes nominations for Fences, Moonlight, Captain Fantastic, Hidden Figures and Manchester by the Sea.


Stars of TV were not forgotten during the nominations, with one notable battle taking place in the best male actor in a drama category, in which Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage will face off against The Crown's John Lithgow, Mr Robot's Rami Malek, House of Cards' Kevin Spacey and This is Us star Sterling K. Brown.


Stranger Things' young star Millie Bobby Brown is set to face a number of more experienced actresses in the shape of her Stranger Things co-star Winona Ryder Westworld's Thandie Newton, House of Cards' Robin Wright, Claire Foy (The Crown).


The 23rd SAG Awards will be held on 29 January 2017.
