Kelis urged to visit abattoir after moose meat boast
R&B star Kelis has been advised to visit an abattoir and see up close how animals are slaughtered after she boasted of feasting on moose and seals.
The Milkshake hitmaker told Q magazine she loves eating exotic meats and local delicacies while on her travels, revealing she even consumed insects on a trip to Thailand.
She says she enjoyed moose meat in Alaska and ate seal in Norway,
telling the publication, "I don't like randomly slaughtering cuddly
creatures, but in Norway there's so many of them. I'm very
practical about food. There's places like Mongolia where it's
normal to eat dog. I'm not exactly running to eat dog but it's part
of their culture."
However, bosses at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) have urged the singer to educate herself about the realities
of animal slaughter to prove she does not have a "heart of
steel".
A PETA spokesman tells WENN, "Kelis needs to visit an abattoir,
where unless she has a heart of steel or none at all, she will
quickly be dispossessed of the absurd notion that there's anything
'practical' about slaughtering animals.
"She is right about only one thing: it's cultural prejudice alone
that allows us to treat members of a particular species as family
while enslaving and violently killing members of other species
without a second thought. Whether we're considering a cow, a pig, a
dog, a seal or a human being, basic biology and commonsense
indicate that we're all made of flesh and blood. We experience the
same emotions, from joy to fear, and we all value our lives,
families and happiness."
