Kanye West's surprise show cancelled due to street chaos
Kanye West's surprise show in New York City was called off on Monday morning (06Jun16) after scenes of chaos surrounded the venue.
The Gold Digger star was originally due to perform at The Governors Ball Music Festival on Sunday (05June16) but it was cancelled due to bad weather, so he headed over to New Jersey for a surprise appearance at Hot 97's Summer Jam Festival with his GOOD Music collaborators including Pusha T, Big Sean, Travis Scott and Desiigner.
However, Kanye still wanted to make up for his Governors Ball
cancellation and his creative director Virgil Abloh wrote on
Instagram that Kanye would doing a full set of his album The Life
of Pablo "at 2am in Manhattan" on Monday, but didn't disclose the
location. It was later revealed online that the concert would be
held at Webster Hall.
The surprise show quickly sold out but that didn't stop thousands
of fans descending on the venue to try and get a glimpse of the
star. Photographs taken outside the hall show streets clogged with
people, with cars struggling to get past. Several police cars can
be seen trying to control the crowd.
A Snapchat of Kanye, reportedly taken by his wife Kim Kardashian,
shows him telling someone to speak to New York City Mayor Bill de
Blasio to shut down some streets so those outside could enjoy the
show as well.
"Call the mayor and shut down a block of about four streets and
everybody put some screens up so they can have a party outside," he
says in the video. "I know it's sold out already."
However, the overcrowding and chaotic scenes lead the show to be
called off, and officials at Webster Hall issued a statement on
Twitter, writing, "There is no late show at Webster Hall tonight.
Please get home safely."
Footage posted by onlookers show Kanye hanging out of the roof of a
car and waving to fans as his vehicle tries to get through the
crowd, with more fans running through the streets after it.
According to reports, Kim shared more videos of Kanye on Snapchat
showing him trying to find another venue. She reportedly told fans
the night was over.
