The singer who shot to fame as Justin Bieber's love interest in his Baby video has become a role model for abused teenagers after coming clean about her experiences as the girlfriend of a violent boy in her song Didn't Mean It.

Jasmine Villegas is well on her way to becoming a household name in America after she was discovered singing on a street corner when she was just 11 and now she's recording her debut album, and it's one song in particular that has won her legions of young fans.

Officials at the National Dating Abuse Hotline have credited Villegas' Didn't Mean It for swelling the calls they get from confused teens and the singer is beginning to receive feedback from young girls she helped.

She explains, "People have said, 'You gave me the courage to call the hotline and I helped my mom get out of an abusive relationship.'"

The 19 year old tells news show Today she decided to write a song about her own personal ordeal after running out of excuses about her cuts and bruises.

She explains, "I used to have, like, bruises, fat lips. I used to have, like, everything. After a while, the excuses just add up, so I couldn't hide it (abuse) anymore."
