Justin Bieber: 'I expected to be booed at VMAs'
Pop star Justin Bieber broke down in tears at the end of his performance at the MTV Video Music Awards because he was expecting to be booed after making a number of mistakes during the set.
The Baby hitmaker made his big comeback at the awards show in Los Angeles on Sunday night (30Aug15) after an extended break from music, during which he suffered numerous personal problems and brushes with the law.
Bieber was seen crying on stage as the crowd cheered him at the end
of his show, and the singer now reveals he was expecting a negative
reaction from the audience.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he
explains, "It was so overwhelming for me, everything... I missed
some cues so I was a little disappointed at that... Honestly, I
just wasn't expecting them to support me in the way they did. Last
time I was at an awards show (at the Billboard Music Awards in
2013) I was booed... I think it's just like I've worked so hard at
this (new) album and at becoming the man I want to become, and then
stepping into situations, you just can't help but feel
judged...
"So I was just feeling judged and wanting to win so badly, and
wanting to do what I love so badly that I just put everything on
the line. And I think that that was what was so special about the
emotional moment at the end, that it was authentic. It was real. I
was really just wanting it so bad."
Bieber's song with Skrillex and Diplo, Where Are U Now, landed an
award for best visual effects at the VMAs on Sunday.
