Joaquin Phoenix in talks to play Jesus

Joaquin Phoenix is in early talks to play Jesus in a new film about Mary Magdalene.

Rooney Mara has already signed on to star in Garth Davis’ film, described as an "authentic and humanistic portrait" of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history.

Phoenix is interested in becoming the latest actor to play Christ on film, but insiders tell The Hollywood Reporter his deal could fall apart, especially if there are scheduling issues.

The actor, who portrayed Johnny Cash in the critically acclaimed Walk the Line, joins the likes of Willem Dafoe, Jim Caviezel, Robert Powell, and Max Von Sydow, who have all played Christ, while New Zealand actor Cliff Curtis took on the role in this year's (16) Risen.
