Elton John: 'Miley flattened the competition at the VMAs'

Written by . Published: September 26 2013

Miley Cyrus has won high praise from Elton John for her controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance, insisting she managed to do what no other artist could during the ceremony - "flatten the competition."

The former Hannah Montana star caused outrage by stripping to latex underwear and performing a raunchy routine with Robin Thicke at the Barclays Center in New York last month (Aug13), and she has become a topic of discussion among viewers and celebrities alike ever since.

And now Elton is weighing in on the scandal - and throwing his support behind the 20-year-old singer.

In an interview with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, Elton explains, "Listen, I've been in the business a long time. Let me tell you what worked at the VMAs - Miley went on and performed like she did. And the whole purpose of the VMAs, when you've got all these big artists competing against each other for attention, is to flatten the opposition. She flattened the opposition.

"Nobody talked about anybody else except Miley. She has two records in the top 10. She has a number one single. And even though I thought it was a weird performance... I've known her for a long time. She's a big supporter of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. She's a terrific girl... It was a controversial performance that got everybody talking and that's what it's supposed to do."
