Donald Glover: 'Star Wars is the most fun I've had on a film set'
Donald Glover is enjoying shooting the new Star Wars movie more than his previous film or TV projects.
Donald, 33, plays space smuggler Han Solo's best friend Lando Calrissian in a new Star Wars spin-off movie which follows the characters in their youth.
Filming on the blockbuster Disney production began earlier this year (17), in locations reportedly including Italy, the U.K., and Spain's Canary Islands.
The Atlanta actor, screenwriter and rapper says that the film shoot has been a delight, as without having to take on writing duties he's been able to focus on his acting and immerse himself in the role.
"This is probably one of my favorite experiences ever," he told Deadline.com. "For working under, like, a huge conglomerate, it's actually been quite an enjoyable, artistic thing. I get to play him (Lando) in a way that I think is honest and true and cool. And it's great because I didn't have to write anything, I'm focused strictly on being this guy."
Lando was famously played by Billy Dee Williams in the second Star Wars film to be released, The Empire Strikes Back.
In the hit 1980 movie, Lando initially appeared excited to meet his old friend Han, played by Harrison Ford, but in fact was preparing to betray him to the forces of the evil Galactic Empire.
Hail, Caesar! star Alden Ehrenreich will play Han in the new movie, which will apparently focus on the character's youth and how he came to befriend Lando.
Donald added that his character is his favorite from the Star Wars franchise, due to his moral ambiguity.
"I feel like people like him 'cause he has a lot of style, but also he's a complicated character in this world," he added. "I think even Han isn't as complicated as Lando is. From the first time you meet him, you don't know whether to trust him or not, and you're constantly not knowing whether to trust him. I like that about him."
The untitled new movie, which also stars Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, and Thandie Newton, is set for release in May next year (17).
