Pop star Demi Lovato attended a mental health benefit gala in New York City on Thursday (05Jun14) to present a top prize to a student who has overcome an eating disorder.

The Skyscraper hitmaker has endured a well-documented battle with mental illness herself, spending time in rehab for bulimia, depression and bipolar disorder in 2010.

She helped raise awareness of the issues at the 2014 Jed Foundation Annual Gala in the Big Apple, where she took to the stage to hand Margaret Kramer the Jerry Greenspan Student Voice of Mental Health Award.

The award honours students who are working towards reducing prejudice surround mental health. Kramer beat her eating disorder and now works on a number of health awareness initiatives at the University of South Carolina.
