David Beckham given standing ovation at Paris soccer game
Soccer ace David Beckham was overcome with emotion on Saturday (18May13) after playing what could be the final game of his career.
The Brit, who announced his retirement earlier this week (beg13May13), left the field in tears when he was substituted in the 81st minute of a match at the Parc des Princes between his team Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and rivals Brest.
Beckham was given a standing ovation by the crowd, which included
former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and his teammates gathered
around to embrace him.
He later told reporters, "It was an emotional night. To see the
reaction of the players and to see the reaction of the fans when I
came off was special."
Beckham's teammates had appointed him captain for the game, and he
was thrilled with their 3-1 victory: "The manager called me and he
said, 'We spoke to the players and we want to make you captain.' It
was special for an Englishman to be captain of PSG, especially on a
night that meant so much to the club."
The athlete, who has yet to confirm whether he will play in PSG's
last away game on 26 May (13), was cheered on by 25 loved ones,
including his mom Sandra, wife Victoria and their four
children.
