Cuban-American singer Christina Milian has praised President Barack Obama after he announced he is working with Cuba's officials to restore diplomatic ties after more than 50 years of tension.

The country has had an economic embargo on its Cold War enemy for years, but on Wednesday (17Dec14) President Obama announced he plans to "end an outdated approach... and instead we will begin to normalise relations between our two countries."

He added, "These 50 years have shown, isolation has not worked. It's time for a new approach."

The monumental policy change includes the opening of an embassy in the communist-run country's capital of Havana and an easing of some restrictions on commerce and travel.

After President Obama's announcement, the Dip It Low hitmaker took to Instagram.com to share her excitement about the new policy, and revealed she hopes to soon visit the land of her ancestors.

She wrote, "Today is a day that I am so grateful and proud to witness in my lifetime... Proud of our president @BarackObama and excited that I can finally experience the land of which my Mom, Dad & Ancestors come from... CUBA!

"It's no longer an urban legend. We're finally going to visit Cuba and so will our children! Here we come!! S/o (shout out) Mom & Dad. They're both so excited right now."
