Beyonce's friends and family honor birthday girl with song dedications
Jay Z, Kelly Rowland and Solange Knowles have paid tribute to birthday girl Beyonce by sharing the songs which evoke their favorite memories of the superstar with fans online.
The Drunk In Love hitmaker turned 34 on Friday (15) and to celebrate the occasion, her loved ones unveiled their "most cherished moments" for a special piece on her website.
Rap mogul Jay Z reveals he always has fond memories when he listens
to their friend Chris Martin's Coldplay tune Yellow, writing, "This
song reminds me of you and I on vacation. 'Look at the stars, look
how they shine for you.' So many legendary nights. It represents
vulnerability; it's us in our own world, away from work and totally
lost in love. 'For you, I'll bleed myself dry.'"
Beyonce's mom, stylist Tina Knowles, selected Home by Stephanie
Mills, and recalled a childhood performance of the track when she
was just nine years old: "You brought the house down and got a
standing ovation and all. You did a spin and wound up backwards and
then - in what would become 'True Beyonce Fashion' - you made it
part of your act. The show must always go on!"
Her father, former manager Mathew Knowles, named Smokey Robinson's
Here I Go Again, while sister Solange remembers Beyonce humming Kim
Burrell's Holy Ghost to her, "being the calming beautiful spirit
she is, making everything that resided in that moment filled with
love".
The icon's Destiny's Child bandmates Rowland and Michelle Williams
also offered up their respective picks, Mary J. Blige's What's the
411, and Island Letter by Shuggie Otis, while her mother-in-law,
Jay Z's mom Gloria Carter, chose Beyonce's own song, I Was
Here.
Beyonce's three-year-old daughter Blue Ivy wasn't left out either -
naming The Little Mermaid tune Part Of Your World, she adds, "Mommy
you sung this to me all the time. Happy Birthday, Mommy!"
