Adele crowned queen of the charts

Adele has been crowned the pop queen of 2011 after scoring the official top-selling album and single of the year.

Adele's 21 and Rolling in the Deep both spent multiple weeks at the top of the Billboard album and singles countdown and now their tallies have been confirmed by chart compilers at Nielsen SoundScan.

21 sold a total of 5.82 million copies last year in the U.S. alone, while the single Rolling in the Deep was snapped up as a download by 5.81 million people.

Adele beat Michael Buble into second place in album sales - the Canadian crooner's Christmas sold less than half the British star's total.

Meanwhile, Adele kicks 2012 off with the Billboard album chart's number one - 21 returns to the top of the countdown for the 14th non-consecutive week and continues to be the album with the most weeks on top since the Titanic soundtrack spent 16 weeks there 14 years ago.

Last week's number one album, Michael Buble's Christmas, plummets to 24 after spending five weeks at the top during the holidays.

The new top three is rounded out by hip-hop stars Drake (Take Care) and Young Jeezy (TM103: Hustlerz Ambition).
