Exploring Cirque du Soleil: CORTEO's Epic Costumes

What's up, guys? Leslie Robbins here for Young Hollywood inside the Microsoft Theater. I'm about to take you behind the scenes of the latest Cirque du Soleil show to land in Los Angeles. Corteo. Okay, now we are in the wardrobe department of the Microsoft Theater, of the show. Corteo, which is Cirque du Soleil, which means stunning costumes and wigs and wardrobe and magic on everyone's bodies. Walk me through the wardrobe of Corteo.

Wardrobe of Corteo, it's a lot of work. It's where a lot of miracles happen. We love it. Corteo it's about details. We have so much costume. We travel with over 2,500 pieces. In one show, you can see between 600 and 700 pieces, but we need to travel with all the rotation, all the backup to be sure everything is okay, if something happened, we need to think outside of the box to have solutions. Then it's amazing. It keep us really busy. We are four. It's an amazing team of four person in wardrobe.

How does four people take care of over 2,500 pieces of wardrobe and quick changes? And it's it's it's unbelievable. Yeah, it's a pacing. It's kind of a dance, huh?

We need the one step, everyone need to follow and we we dance all together to follow the flow with all the challenges that can happen in a day. But we are really, really, really organized.

The cool thing about Corteo is it's actually showing humans, people, I mean, one or two horses, but not animals or bugs like Ovo last last year when you guys were here. It's it's so it's human wardrobe.

That it's super nice. And Corteo we are special because when an artist signed a contract with Corteo, wardrobe become responsible of their hair. We don't have any wig. You will see it's all natural hair. They cannot have purple hair like that. And we have a hair station and each artist needs to be responsible of their own hair and it's what we see on stage.

Wow. So if if you could show me like the most special piece of clothing that Corteo has, what would it be?

It would be the white clown. The the one of the main character, it's it's amazing. This costume it's hand beaded. It's it's so beautiful. For me, it brings the magic on stage. It's super nice and the character itself, Marcelo doing it, he he does an amazing job to to bring this this character on stage. It's really, really nice.

And and I've been talking about the message and the theme of Corteo. It's so different than other Cirque du Soleil shows. The themes are really adult, sometimes heavy, sometimes light. Thank goodness, sometimes it goes over the children's heads, some of those those scenes. But but it's something for everybody and it's really unique that way.

Yeah. And it's life, huh? Life sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's a bit harder. It's to celebrate life and what comes with life.

And with the wardrobe, you're taking characters through so many different stages of life. Childhood stage and and with the beds and adulthood. To angels. Yeah. You're going through every stage of life. And so you have to show that in wardrobe.

Yeah. It's amazing. Yeah. But we have an amazing partnership with Montreal. Mont the headquarter in Montreal, they they work a lot. And after that, they give us the ball and we work it on our side. It's a really, really nice teamwork, even with the other department, with the artist. It needs to be it needs to be like that. To to work with everybody to create something this so amazing on stage.

So, 2,500 pieces of wardrobe. How many uh cases do you have?

It's like a travel nightmare.

Yeah. But it's a dream. We love it. It's a dream. It's a dream. It's a job.

It's a dream. And and and you're spreading like just pure joy to people that come and see it. Oh, nice. So, with wardrobe always comes makeup. Always.

And we travel with the artists are responsible to do their own makeup. Some of them you can see they have like nice details, really small one. They need to be really, really precise. The other one, we have more like a natural makeup side. That it's super nice. And we need to travel with everything in one case that you can see here. We have all the eye shadow on this one. We have all the the pens.

This is a woman's dream.

Yeah. It's It's We really, really uh love it.

And I love this. I'm officially joining Cirque. This is just for the makeup. This is this is amazing. It's just for makeup. Yeah. And wardrobe. So, every artist has to do their own makeup. Do you give them a tutorial obviously before they join the show?

Yes, for sure. And they have a step-by-step to follow to be sure everything is there, everything is perfect. And for sure we need to have a look on them.

Well, I know firsthand about Cirque makeup when I did a backstage tour of Toruk. And and I was turned into the avatar character, the blue. So, Cirque makeup, wardrobe, it all goes hand in hand.

Yes. Yeah. And it depend of each show. It depend of the story of the show. And what is nice as we said, Corteo is a human side. Then we need to know who is on stage. We need to see Julie, we need to see Betsy, we need to see the people on stage. Then it's what it's nice with Corteo, it's a light makeup to know that it's human on stage.

Best wardrobe department ever.
