YH: You’ve been in the music industry since you were just 12 years old! Now that you’re 16, and you have a new album coming this year, can you tell us a bit about how your sound has matured? What 3 words would you use to describe your upcoming album?
GM: My sound has definitely drastically changed over the years. I went from super corny pop music to a mature sounding version of myself. It’s elevated in terms of lyricism, melodies, and writing. It has a lot to do with working with new people and finding people that make me feel free to make the best music possible in a room together. [My new music is] edgy, emotional, and realistic.
YH: What songs and artists inspire you currently? What have you been listening to on repeat this summer?
GM: The people that inspire me to make music and my style of music… my top 3 would have to be Juice WRLD, Machine Gun Kelly, and Justin Bieber for sure. The one artist that I just can’t stop playing is Drake. I went to a Drake concert about a week ago. I was standing next to Drake’s dad and 2 Chainz. I gave a little head bob like, “What’s up?” to Drake’s dad. That was really cool! I was freaking out about that. My favorite Drake song right now is “Not You Too”. All time favorite Drake song is “BackOutsideBoyz” or “Hold on, We’re Going Home”… but “Doing it Wrong” is also really good! I don’t know! There’s too many good ones.
YH: You worked with multi-platinum and 2-time GRAMMY-nominated producer John Feldmann on your upcoming album. What was this experience like?
GM: It was amazing! Working with him was a whole new experience. He helped develop my sound and get me to where I wanted to be musically. Our first writing session, we went in there and made one song. Then he was like, “Alright, sick. You wanna make another one?” and I was like, “Heck yeah.” We just kept making music. I think we banged out 5 songs in the span of 3 days! He’s very easy to work with. He’s very fun in the studio. You can really feel his energy!
YH: If you could chat with your younger self, what would you want to tell young Gavin?
GM: I would tell young Gavin…to trust the process and to not give up when you’re at your lowest. When you feel like nothing’s going your way, just keep going and not let anybody else's words affect or get in the way of your future. And work harder! I always have to remind myself to work harder. I’m still a teenager! It’s all about finding the fine line between when I have to work and when I have the time to be free.
YH: What are your biggest goals/aspirations for the future of your music career?
GM: I definitely know exactly where I want to go. In the near future, I want to be selling out high-capacity shows. I can’t wait to finally go on tour and see everybody who's been waiting to see me. And when this new album comes out, and the new single, it’s going to be literally the best thing ever. I’m so excited! [When I’m performing] I’ve gotta bring it with these songs!
YH: Tell us all about your single “Psycho”! What was the inspiration behind this track? Any favorite lyrics? What should we know about this song before we give it a listen?
GM: “Psycho”, there’s a lot of realism to it. It’s based on a true story. It’s about that girl who just can’t seem to get off of you but it’s kind of confusing because you can’t tell if she hates you or loves you. Every time you do something without her, she comes back into your life. She’s constantly confusing you and it’s driving you insane. My favorite lyric is in the second verse. I open it with, “You were never there for me when I needed you most, but you would stick around and watch it all go up in smoke.” I think that’s the part that really sticks to me because of how true it is. I feel like everybody who listens to this song can relate to it, whether that’s with a relationship with a friend, girlfriend, parent, cousin — it’s just relatable.
YH: Anything else we should know?
GM: “Psycho” music video will be out September 9th! And stay tuned for the future… The album will be coming soon!
