'Sonic The Hedgehog' Movie Is Everything an OG SEGA Gamer Could Ask For!

Written by Adriana Darcy. Published: February 26 2020

Whether or not you grew up playing the Sonic the Hedgehog video games, Sonic is a character that anyone can recognize.

I’ve always had a love for that speedy blue hedgehog, so when I heard there was going to be a movie, I was more than excited — and it lived up to be everything I could ask for!

Sonic the Hedgehog was released this past Valentine’s Day. The action movie shows a baby Sonic sent to earth to protect his powers, which give him his supersonic speed.

Years later. Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is still hiding on Earth when he accidentally causes a massive power outage, leading to a cat-and-mouse chase where Sonic and his new (human) best friend, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), are hunted by Doctor Eggman (Jim Carrey).

Movies based on video games are hard to get right, but the directors hit the mark with this one! Sonic the Hedgehog is a light, funny movie with just the right amount of action to keep you watching.

One of the best parts of the movie is its graphics. The original Sonic design for the movie notoriously received backlash for attempting to be too realistic, so the editors went back and made him look a little more like his character in the games. His cute, cartoonish design, along with the amazing effects in the movie (like the blue lightning when his power builds up), are incredible.

This movie also hit the mark on characterization. Every single character in this movie has a purpose and adds to the overall movie. Doctor Eggman is one of the quirkiest villains I’ve ever seen, but this movie makes it work and you do begin to wonder if Sonic and Tom can defeat him.

Tom is one of the best sidekicks Sonic could have asked for. Despite his world being thrown upside-down by the arrival of Sonic in his home, he chooses to risk it all to help protect him, and the two characters have one the best movie bromances I’ve ever seen.

Despite being a minor character and only having a few appearances, Officer Wade (Adam Pally) was one of my favorites. Pally perfectly portrayed Wade as a less-than-intelligent officer who will make you laugh.

Oh, and who doesn't love Jim Carrey as an over-the-top villain? 'Nuff said.

Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog was a funny, easygoing movie to experience that will have you reminiscing on those days growing up, playing his game on your Genesis.
