No Sequels? No Problem! 'The Mortal Instruments' Series Heading to the Small Screen!

Last year, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones came out in theaters with big hopes of yet another successful young adult novel series transition to the big screen. Although the movie didn’t do quite as well as it was projected to do, the mass following of the series will not rest until they get more of Cassandra Clare’s dystopian series! Although they did not get the green light for a sequel, it was just announced that a television adaptation of The Mortal Instruments is in the works. With a dedicated and passionate fan base, The Mortal Instruments has the potential to be a big hit, maybe not on the big screen, but on the small screen!

There are many fans out there upset about the sequels getting axed, but a television show opens up a whole new ball game for the series as well as young adult novels as a genre. Many concerns with novel-to-film stories are that the movies don’t do the book enough justice, or they are forced to leave a lot of elements out of the movie. With the format of a television series, writers and directors will be able to incorporate and include much more from the book without being contained by the 90 minutes or 120 minutes of movie runtime. In this way, the television show can go deeper and more in depth than movies could ever do for a novel. There is also some precendence for this already, with the massive success of HBO's "Game of Thrones", based on author George R.R. Martin's 5- (eventually 7) book A Song of Ice and Fire Series.

Many things, however, are still not known. We can speculate that production will probably begin sometime in 2015 but details are still up in the air. Will the original cast come back to reprise their roles? Will they start over from the beginning or continue with the second installment from where the movie left off? Either way, there’s no doubt that fans are very excited for this.

If The Mortal Instruments proves to be successful as a television series then the sky is the limit! This is because Clare’s series has six installments and a whole set of prequels and spin-offs to integrate and get inspiration from.

One thing I can say about The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones is that, after I watched the movie, I immediately went to Target to get the book. Even though the movie may not have done that well, it got me interested in the story, and now I can say that I am dying to see it continue on-screen… and, okay, maybe I fell in love Jamie Campbell Bower.
