ICYMI: Linda Hamilton Returns To 'Terminator' With an All-New Cast In 'Dark Fate' Trailer!

Written by D.J. Rivera. Published: June 01 2019

Just when you thought you'd seen the last of the Terminator films, one more comes out of the woodwork with the same promise of rebooting the classic that no one really asked for. But before you go rolling your eyes and counting out the 6th film in the killer robot time-traveling saga, it is essential to be aware of who is coming back in Terminator: Dark Fate to not only save the world but the franchise as well...

Listen, it's understandable to be cooled entirely on these films. The last 3 iterations had their merits but overall failed in comparison to the first 2 chapters, which are the ones that fans consider the best ever with most of them ignoring that the others even exist. Those individuals have that in common with Terminator: Dark Fate, as it pulls the same trick last year’s Halloween reboot did and ignores the ones no one seems to like. To help press the reset button, the powers-that-be have called upon the man that directed the first 2 classics, the box office-crushing filmmaker known as James Cameron, to produce and write the narrative. And from the looks of the first trailer, it seems that Cameron and director Tim Miller have pulled out all the stops, including bringing back one of the original stars, and I'm not talking about the Governator... although he does make a mysterious appearance.

Ladies and Gentleman, the prophecies have come true, and the planets have aligned. Linda Hamilton has officially returned, and her Terminator-killing skills have only gotten better. One of the original badasses of sci-fi, Hamilton's game-changing performance as Sarah Connor helped put The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) on the map. Now she's back in the driver's seat, and she is not alone. Joining the iconic actress on the big screen for some hip-firing target practice is Gabriel Luna, who will be following in Robert Patrick's iconic footsteps as the new-and-improved liquid metal death dealer called the Rev 9, a deadly combo of the first 2 Terminators with an epic twist: This guy can split into two, meaning double the Terminator trouble for anyone trying to stop Skynet.

This would seem to be Blade Runner 2049's Mackenzie Davis, who stars as some sort of human hybrid indestructible android sent from the future to protect fellow franchise newcomer Natalia Reyes, playing someone named Dani Ramos. Interestingly enough, Sarah Conner compares herself to Ramos after acknowledging that Davis's character Grace is a model she's never seen before, and she would know given her past experience in this department. Grace believes she's human, but from the way she's swinging sledgehammers and taking down police officers, my money's on Terminator. And, of course, we see Arnold Schwarzenegger himself back in the mix as a new T-800, completing what looks to be the most stacked cast in the entire franchise.

Honestly, I had written off the Terminator films, as Genysis failed to reinvigorate the same spark the original 2 pulled off. And it's hard to imagine where the story could go after many less-than-stellar attempts. But the return of both Hamilton and Cameron is the main selling point for this latest entry and could mean that we really don't have to have a future where only bad Terminator movies are being made. They are 2 pieces that have been absent since T2 and could just be what the franchise needs to survive the apocalypse of criticism its last 3 predecessors experienced and not end up at the bottom of the five dollar bin alongside them. This, along with the new additions to the cast, are a severe argument for Dark Fate to be the third Terminator motion picture we deserved but never got. At the end of T2, the Terminator gave Sarah the luxury of hope, and Hamilton's return offers myself and everyone else excited about this one that very same luxury.

Terminator: Dark Fate opens in theaters on November 1, 2019.
