Okay, everyone, don't panic.

Like it or not, no matter where you live, we must all face the idea of potential disasters that can strike any of us. Whether you're at work, at home, day or night, a disaster can strike, and depending on your location, it could be an earthquake, hurricane, fire, anything, and all things natural disasters need a plan just in case of emergency. 

One of the first things is creating a plan; when you're at work, knowing the floor plan and an evacuation procedure is very important. But depending on the disaster, the protocol to keep yourself and each other safe will vary. Here is the CDC's information on how to keep you and your family safe in different types of disasters. But there is one thing that we can all do prior to any disaster to help ensure our survival after disaster hits...

Some of you may already have an emergency go bag for your home and family and some may not. In the midst of recent disasters, I realized I should make my bag and do it as soon as possible. While some stores carry ready-made emergency bags you can buy, you can also make one yourself.

Here are some key items to include in your emergency go bag. (Items do vary with every disaster, but here's a generic list that will come in handy in any disaster. *List is not complete*) 

Water 

The CDC, Red Cross, and FEMA suggest to make three days' worth of rations in a emergency go kit, and for water, it's one gallon per person a day. 

Food

Cans and other non-perishable foods work best so that updating kits won't have to be done too often.

First Aid Kit

Flashlight

Batteries

Whistle

This is so that you can signal people to come find you. 

Dust Masks

Duct Tape

Plastic bags/Trashbags

Plastic Ties

Can Opener

Local Maps

Swiss Army Knife/Multi-tool

Extra Clothes

Matches

Toilet Paper

Personal Items

Medication, feminine products, pet supplies, baby supplies or personal items that you may need.

Family Documents

Cash

Hand Crank/Battery Radio

These are just some essential items for an emergency go bag. You can use a duffel bag or even plastic bins to store your emergency items. Being prepared will go a long way in the event that a disaster occurs. Just remember not to panic and remember the ways to stay safe!
