There’s a funny thing happening as a result of quarantining as long as we have been. While we can’t reunite with our friends just yet, we’ve been given a plethora of reunions from our favorite fictional friends.
We’ve seen the stars of High School Musical reunite, the cast of The Goonies, the whole "Victorious" crew, and more.
It’s been a blast of nostalgia, with each new reunion providing some warm fuzzies for longtime fans of these projects.
Thanks to Meghan Trainor, we’ve also gotten a Spy Kids reunion! She and her husband Daryl Sabara, best known for playing Juni Cortez in Spy Kids, went live on Trainor’s Instagram with none other than Sabara’s on-screen sister, Alexa PenaVega.

And while the reunion was packed with enough gems for any Spy Kids fan to geek out on – like Meghan Trainor actually did – it sparked another thought in our head. A Spy Kids reboot could definitely happen post-quarantine. And there’s a way for it to plausibly include Meghan Trainor in a starring role too!
Let’s take a closer look, shall we?
Clearly the sibling chemistry is still there between PenaVega and Sabara. Are we even surprised? They’ve stayed in touch over the years, and seeing them interact all grown up something we need more of. We also already know that Carmen and Juni both stayed with the OSS into adulthood, thanks to Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World.
This provides a few options. First, there’s the idea of Carmen and Juni teaming up once again to go on a mission to save the world. In this case, we could see a more mature, PG-13 version of Spy Kids, depicting their struggles of being adults now.
The second, more appealing option is to bring the Spy Kids story full circle and make Carmen and Juni Cortez the new spy parents. Considering Carmen and Juni were the literal first Spy Kids – designated SK1 and SK2 in Island of Lost Dreams – it’s not a leap to think that there would be some pressure on their own kids to live up to the family name. Give us the hairbrained tales of the Cortez cousins! (Even though they would likely be just as unstoppable as their parents.)
As for Meghan Trainor’s part in these? Obviously, she’d be Juni’s wife!
Back in Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, Juni had a pretty serious crush on the First Daughter, Alexandra.
At the time, she was played by Taylor Momsen. But all grown up, she could easily be played by Trainor.
Maybe now Alexndra became the President herself, and Juni is the First Husband. Together they run the country, and their kids protect it as secret agents. Maybe Alexandra became director of the OSS and has wine nights with Carmen while Juni handles fun dad/uncle duties.
While we’re at it, let’s get Carlos PenaVega in there too, as Carmen’s husband. Maybe they met when Carmen performed “Isle of Dreams” while undercover.
There’s really a lot of possibility here, so Robert Rodriguez, if you’re listening…
