HIDDEN ON STREAMING: "Soundtrack"

Written by Courtney Allen. Published: January 18 2020

If you’re reading this, I can almost bet that you’re guilty of asking your closest friends and family members (and sometimes all of your followers on Instagram and friends of Facebook) “What should watch on Netflix?” at least once a month.

Definitely more if you’re like us and often regrettably find the time in the middle of your week to watch 2 seasons of a single show in 2 days… whoops!

But hey, there is a brighter, more positive side to this. Because if it weren’t for our semi-unproductive habits, we might not have stumbled across one of our favorite shows on Netflix right now and be here to tell you about it!

It’s called "Soundtrack", and we can bet (yes, we’re betting on you again) that you aren’t watching another show like it!

"Soundtrack" is Netflix’s newest musical drama series that recounts various love stories and how they connect a diverse group of people living in Los Angeles. The musical series flaunts familiar faces that include Jenna Dewan (Step Up), Madeleine Stowe (ABC’s "Revenge"), and Christina Millian (Love Don’t Cost A Thing), and some a little more new, like male lead Paul James (ABC Family’s "Greek") and Callie Hernandez (La La Land).

"Soundtrack" is full of flashbacks, tragedy, romance, and, of course, some good ol’ tunes (we’re only halfway through the season and we have a full backlog of Shazams).

If there’s one thing you need not do, it’s let the word “musical” scare you off. Trust us, we know where musicals stand with the population: people either love them or people hate them. But "Soundtrack" isn’t your typical musical series. None of the characters actually sing their own songs. Instead, they lip sync (and sometimes dance) to music that captures the emotion and experience of the character in that moment. You’ve heard of the popular phrase “soundtrack to your life", right? Well, "Soundtrack" brings that phrase to our television screens.

The best part about the show is that the storylines are extremely relatable, and the music is far from being "too cheesy" for all the musical naysayers. A lot of the songs on the show we actually have on our personal playlists. Of course, there is some added drama with characters singing and dancing, but they flow in and out of the scenes very well. The show definitely maintains its likability for viewers of all kinds.

But if you do love musicals, well, what are you waiting for? Make sure to give this Netflix original a chance with your extra long weekend. We’ll be right there with ya!
