Emily Blunt Is Practically Perfect In Every Way in First 'Mary Poppins Returns' Teaser!
The upcoming sequel will be coming out 54 years after the release of the original in 1964, and it looks like much has changed. The trailer opens with shots of a windy, gray day on Cherry Tree Lane before closing in on the iconic green kite fluttering in a garbage bin. As the wind blows the kite free, we follow it swooping down the cobblestone and past Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), Bert’s apprentice, on a bike. It also knocks the hat off a gentleman reading the paper on a bench.
Finally, we see the adorable George Banks (Joel Dawson) trying to take control of the kite after diving headfirst into a giant bush. With some assistance from Jackt, the two try to bring the kite down, only for it to disappear in the clouds. A few moments later we see Mary Poppins herself (Emily Blunt) float down from the sky, trading her signature umbrella for the kite, as the two look on in jaw-dropping wonder.
Rounding out the trailer are now-grownup Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer) serving another heavy dose of nostalgia as they greet Mary Poppins in shocked disbelief. When Michael admits “It’s wonderful to see you,” Poppins responds in what is already one of the best lines of the year: “Yes it is, isn’t it?” The shot of her mirror-self giving her a final once-over was the cherry on top.
This sequel is shaping up to be beyond supercalifragilisticexpialidocious with its all-star cast featuring Meryl Streep as Poppin’s cousin, Topsy, and Angela Lansbury as the Balloon Lady. The film is set to premiere Christmas Day this year and we can’t wait to see everything it has in store!
