5. “Penny Dreadful”

“Penny Dreadful” ending after Season 3 was a surprise that the show didn’t announce until the end of the season. But this sad news was helped by a great ending that finished the story of the lead character in a way that justified the choice to end the show.

In case you missed out on this amazing series on Showtime, it’s a dark drama based around the characters from classic horror stories, like Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and a few others. Set in the Victorian Era, the lead heroine is Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), an original character to the show, who has intense emotional trauma but fights through it to try to help her friend Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) find his missing daughter.

The finale season of “Penny Dreadful” finished the story arc of Vanessa Ives, who has spent her whole life fighting her personal demons -- some emotional, while others are very real. While I wish I got to see more of Vanessa, Ethan, and all the others, the end to her story felt right. I appreciate a show that knows when it should end instead of going on well past its time.
