Bad Cinderella Is Going To Be So Good!

Written by Heather Van Ness. Published: October 14 2022

Cinderella is receiving a makeover thanks to Broadway legend Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bad Cinderella debuting March 23, 2023, and starring Linedy Genao. As the play’s name would suggest, Cinderella is not how we remember her. In the beautiful kingdom of Belleville, many consider it a Utopia. “Only one stubborn peasant stands in the way of absolute perfection: Cinderella. To the flawless residents and royals of Belleville, this damsel IS the distress,” according to the Bad Cinderellawebsite. The show will include modern considerations of beauty standards and same-sex relationships.

The production previously ran as just Cinderella in London’s West End last year to a warm reception. Webber has promised new music for this Broadway rendition, and proving true to that, he has already released the title track with Genao. You can find it on Spotify, or check out the clip from the duo’s "The Today Show" performance. Fans of the London production might be surprised to hear some lyrical changes, but we promise Genao’s sassy vocals will shake away any possible trepidation. You’re in for a treat!

Webber is the mastermind behind stage classics like The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar. Phantom debuted on Broadway in 1979 and, after an impressively long run, is leaving the main stage February 18 – the day after Bad Cinderella preview performances begin! In with the new, and that includes Linedy Genao as the first Latina to originate a role of Webber’s on Broadway. This will also be her first leading role. Theater fans may recognize her from the ensemble of On Your Feet! She was also an understudy for Dear Evan Hansen this past September.

Webber will be reuniting with School of Rock collaborators, director Laurence Connor and choreographer JoAnn M. Hunter, with lyrics by David Zippel. We’re sure to have another classic on our hands! Tickets are on sale now, so don’t miss your chance to snag a seat.
