5 Tips For Getting Your First Tattoo!
With so much of tattooing culture often being considered too "taboo" to talk about even now in the 21st Century, stepping into your first appointment can lead to a lot of anxiety. Questions can pop up about just about everything having to do with the subject. Overall, tattoos can feel intimidating.
For those who are pondering the best practices in preparation for their first tattoo, we’ve got you covered. As someone with tattoos myself, I can assure you that tattoos are not as scary as they are made out to be. Follow these simple steps and be sure to take a few deep breaths along the way!
1. Research Your Artist
If you have a design or style in your head, it’s important that you research artists that best align with your vision. There is a large variety of different art styles existing in the tattooing world -- fine line, abstract, American traditional, etc. -- so finding artists that specialize in your style of choice is essential.
Not only does this allow for a better connection between your artist and your design, but the artist will have a portfolio of their work. This means, the final design will be done with care, attention to detail, and expertise.
Additionally, be sure to set aside time to talk to the artist. Once you select a tattooer, when discussing designs, you’ll need to be aware of the timeline of drafting and edits.
2. Be Sure To Eat (and Bring Snacks) and Drink Water Beforehand
Tattooing can be a lot (and a long process)! It’s both a wear on your skin and your body, which means that if you fuel up, you’re in for a better experience. Always make sure to drink plenty of water and eat before attending a tattooing session -- your artists will thank you! And don’t be afraid to ask if you can bring snacks for the session. Some tattoos may require that you sit in the chair for several hours, so making sure that your body is cared for is a necessity.
3. Moisturize (But Not The Day Of)
For best tattooing results, you’ll want to make sure that your skin is moisturized. Flaky or rough skin can cause difficulties when using a tattoo gun. A week or two prior to your first appointment, you should start exfoliating and using lotion on the area where the tattoo will be. This will allow for your skin to be prepped in time for the appointment.
The best tip, however, is to not exfoliate or lotion the day of your tattoo! The lotion will impact the needles and is often removed prior to the design being done.
4. Wear Appropriate Clothing
It can slip your mind once or twice when prepping for a tattoo session, but make sure you wear clothes that are comfortable and allow easy access to the tattoo area. There is a chance, depending on your tattoo placement, that you may have to remove articles of clothing or lift them for the artist.
Also note that you should not wear your favorite article of clothing or cutest clothes. Tattoos are like any other art medium -- there is always a chance of ink spillage, smudging, or staining. The best way to prevent your clothes from being affected by the process is to choose clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy.
5. Take a Deep Breath
It’ll all be okay! If you have any questions and concerns please don’t waste time, talk to your artist. I remember the first time I got a tattoo, and the best way to calm your nerves is to voice your concerns to your artist. Many are willing to take the time to explain the process, start slow, and communicate throughout the experience.
