4 Endangered Species You Should Know About (and How You Can Help) for World Wildlife Conservation Day!
Sumatran Elephant
The Sumatran elephant is critically endangered, with half of its population being lost in one generation due to habitat loss and human-elephant conflict. Because of rapid development and deforestation, elephants raid human settlements, destroying crops and homes, and sometimes hurting and killing people. This often than not leads to human retaliation and the elephants lose their lives. Sumatran elephants are also victims of poaching for their tusks in the ivory trade. Over 100,000 elephants have been killed by poachers in the past decade.
The Amur leopard, Orangutan, Hawksbill turtle and Sumatran elephant are just four of the many critically endangered animals on our planet. And unfortunately, humans are the greatest threat to their livelihood.
A very important reminder on World Wildlife Conservation Day: once an animal is extinct, there is no bringing them back. So let's continue to raise awareness today, and every day, to keep these four animals, and so many others alive for centuries to come. Click through for ways that you can get involved TODAY!
