3 Ways That Miley Cyrus's "Black Mirror" Episode Is Completely On-Brand!

She’s not the goody two-shoes that Hollywood wanted us to think she was.

Before Cyrus revealed her raw passion, edge, and frustration, we only saw the side of her that Hollywood wanted us to see: her happy-go-lucky, pop sensation facade, Hannah Montana. As the young pop star grew up, she started to grow out of the mold that Hollywood had shaped her in. She began to push back against the expectations that had been thrown at her, and she showed us that there was more substance and individualism to her than just the glitzy Hannah Montana that we saw on TV. Cyrus’s character, Ashley O, can relate all too well to bottling up her authentic voice. She wanted to release more meaningful music that she was passionate about, but her exploitative manager and aunt, Catherine, forced her to perform the unoriginal, feel-good songs that were more likely to keep her relevant. In the episode, Catherine is a metaphor for Hollywood’s expectations, holding her back from speaking what’s really on her mind.
