If you thought 2023 was a great year for movies with Barbie, Poor Things, and Saltburn, just to name a few, then 2024 is set to be even better. 2023 also showed a return to Hollywood’s love of biopics with Oppenheimer, Priscilla, and Napoleon, and 2024 is looking like a year even more full with stories of some of our favorite artists, inventors, and influential figures that lead us to declare 2024 as the year of the biopic!

Here are some of the most exciting titles that were or will be released this year!

1. Back to Black (in theaters May 17)

Arguably the most exciting name on the list, Back to Black is a biopic of the late singer Amy Winehouse through her legendary yet tragically short life. Starring English up-and-comer Marisa Abela as Winehouse, the trailer shows a glimpse of Abela as the British crooner, and, dare we say, the resemblance is uncanny! Catch us in the theater sobbing our eyes out while singing along to “Valerie”...

2. Shirley (on Netflix March 22)

Dropping later this month, Shirley follows the inspirational story of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black congresswoman who ran for President of the United States in 1972. The film will draw from exclusive conversations between Chisholm’s family and friends and go deeper into the story of her historic presidential campaign. Starring Oscar winner Regina King as the titular glass-ceiling shattering woman, this biopic is sure to be an impactful and empowering watch.

3. Bob Marley: One Love (available on VOD/Digital)

Good News: This Bob Marley biopic has already been out since February! Starring Kingsley Ben Adir as the late Jamaican singer alongside Marvel darling Lashana Lynch as his incredible wife Rita, One Love takes place from 1976 to 1978 during a period of political divisions in Jamaica and the strong relationships Bob Marley maintained in his personal life throughout. This biopic is a can’t-miss look into the man who gave us the songs that brought us all together, from “Redemption Song”, “No Woman, No Cry”, to the titular “One Love”. This movie will definitely make you “get together and feel alright...”

This year also sees the exciting development of upcoming biopics like Timothée Chalamet’s take on legendary folk singer Bob Dylan, a biopic of the glam rock band KISS, and one one but four new films by Sam Mendes focusing on each member of The Beatles!

Put these release dates into your calendar and see you in theaters!
