Ryan Tedder was on verge of breakdown after new album release

Written by . Published: April 27 2017

Ryan Tedder took an unplanned break in November (16) because he "hit a wall of exhaustion" and almost had a breakdown.

The singer's band OneRepublic released their fourth album Oh My My in October (16) and a month later Ryan called his manager and announced he had to take break because the "psychological toll" of making a record had left him shattered.

"We handed in (Oh My My) and pretty much the month later, I hit a wall of exhaustion," he revealed to Newsweek.com. "I pretty much had a breakdown. I got to November and collapsed. I lost it in a hotel room.

"I'd been gone 220 days in 2016 and it wasn't even a touring year... I called my manager and said, 'Stop everything.' He said, 'You just put an album out.' I said, 'I don't care - I'm close to quitting.'"

He stopped working completely over the festive period and returned in January, but he still didn't have the energy to face promoting and touring the album so he told his manager he wanted to just work on other artists' music.

While writing songs for others, Ryan would sometimes come across material for OneRepublic, and the band are releasing new track No Vacancy on Friday (28Apr17), but they aren't in any hurry to make another record.

"I'm walking away from the album idea for a while," he explained. "We are going to play songs off Oh My My on tour, but the psychological toll it takes to make an album...I can't do that for a while. So we're just doing new music all the time."

The 37-year-old has collaborations with Kygo, Stargate and former Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello in the works.
