Priyanka Chopra appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador
Actress Priyanka Chopra was named the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF)'s latest Goodwill Ambassador at the charity's 70th anniversary event on Monday (12Dec16).
The Quantico star attended the celebration at the United Nations headquarters in New York, where she was inducted into the "UNICEF global family" by fellow Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham and Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown.
"My involvement with UNICEF began almost 10 years ago in India,"
Priyanka said in a statement. "Today, I stand here humbled,
enriched and committed, because of it. Thank you, UNICEF, for the
amazing journey so far as well as this huge honor.
"On those (charity) trips, I spent time with numerous young girls
and their families and experienced firsthand the transformative
power of empowering young girls with opportunities that are
rightfully theirs."
The 34-year-old previously served at a national ambassador for the
charity in her native India, where she was an advocate for
empowering young girls.
Priyanka shared pictures from her moment onstage at the event on
Instagram, and wrote, "Thank you @davidbeckham and
@milliebobby_brown for inducting me into the @UNICEF global family.
Always delighted to meet like-minded people who believe that there
is humanity left in us after all."
She also posted a picture of her posing with David and other
ambassadors including Orlando Bloom and Jackie Chan and told her
followers she was looking forward to working with them to give a
voice for every child and "build a world where children's rights
are respected and protected."
Millie served as the evening's co-host and interviewed David
onstage about his 11 years in the role, while Orlando took part in
an onstage discussion with child refugee Mustafa Al Said, who fled
conflict in his native Syria and now lives in Germany.
