Pharrell Williams teaches music masterclass at NYU
Pharrell Williams added professor to his resume after teaching a music masterclass at New York University.
The Grammy winner was named the 50th anniversary artist-in-residence at the school's prestigious Tisch School of the Arts in October (15), and recently had the chance to meet with undergrad students for a lesson of a lifetime.
During the private, one-hour session, he listened in on a recording
session and offered the students constructive feedback, as well as
detailing his own creative process in making hit records.
In a video posted on YouTube following Pharrell during his time in
the classroom, professor Jason King praised the Happy singer for
his career success, saying, "The idea behind the masterclass was to
have Pharrell work directly with our students, and to give them
ideas about how to shape the music they’re making. It’s our mission
to train students as creative entrepreneurs, and few artists have
married the art and business of recorded music as successfully as
Pharrell."
In addition to the masterclass, Pharrell and his wife Helen funded
a scholarship program which offers high school students the
opportunity to attend the Clive Davis Institute at NYU during a
special summer session this July (16).
Pharrell also invited high schoolers from the Future Music Moguls,
a free high school program at Clive Davis Institute, to observe the
masterclass.
"I am, both personally and through (his charity) From One Hand to
AnOTHER, committed to bringing kids experiences that ignite their
passions, challenge their minds, and provide them with
opportunities to learn and be creative," Pharrell said in an
interview with NYU.
