Lena Dunham clarifies Odell Beckham Jr. comments
Lena Dunham is attempting to diffuse the social media uproar surrounding the disparaging comments she made about Odell Beckham Jr. at the Met Gala.
During an interview with Amy Schumer for Dunham's online Lenny Letter, the pair discussed how much they hated attending the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute Gala in New York back in May (16).
Lena, who wore a tuxedo to the ball and took Lenny Letter partner
Jenni Konner as her date, explained she sat next to New York Giants
wide receiver Odell at the gala.
"I was sitting next to (football star) Odell Beckham Jr., and it
was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he
determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards," she
adds. "He was like, 'That's a marshmallow. That's a child. That's a
dog'. It wasn't mean - he just seemed confused...
"It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was
scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow
tie. I was like, 'This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of
Getting Rejected by Athletes'."
Lena revealed she headed home shortly after Amy made an early exit
from the gala. "I attempted to grind my a** on Michael B. Jordan
for an additional twenty minutes and then left right after you,"
the Girls star joked.
Now, the 30-year-old is trying to set the record straight, after
being on the receiving end of a vicious backlash on social media
following her demeaning comments about the 23-year-old athlete.
Tweeting Beckham Jr. directly on Friday (02Sep16), Lena said,
"@OBJ_3 is talented, stylish, seems super awesome and wasn't into
chatting with me at a fancy party."
In a series of tweets, she said her critique of the football player
stemmed from her own insecurities, writing: "My story about him was
clearly (to me) about my own insecurities as an average-bodied
woman at a table of supermodels & athletes."
Leaning on her comedienne friend Schumer for support, Lena
continued, "It's not an assumption about who he is or an
expectation of sexual attention. It's my sense of humour, which has
kept me alive for 30 years. Glad the outrage machine roars on
though, right @amyschumer?"
"PS I'll try and dance myself onto @michaelb4jordan if I have the
chance, even when I'm a married grandma. I'm a red blooded str8
(straight) woman!" she added.
Odell Beckham Jr. has yet to comment.
