Kanye West wants to design furniture for students
Kanye West is desperate to design furniture for Ikea.
The rapper/producer admits he is keen to work with the furniture giants to create good looking pieces for students. It's not the first time Kanye has been linked to the cult furnishings store. The Stronger hitmaker was spotted taking in a tour of Ikea's main operations at its headquarters in Sweden, in March (16).
Already a veteran of shoe and clothing designs, with his sell out
Yeezy sneakers and fashion line for Adidas, in an interview on
Radio 1 airing on Monday evening (01Aug16) Kanye launched an appeal
to the furniture giant.
“I have to work with Ikea — make furniture for interior design, for
architecture,” he told BBC Radio 1.“I know that if I do a
minimalist apartment inside a college dorm where the TV goes on the
side of the wall... Yo Ikea, allow Kanye to create, allow him to
make this thing.”
Kanye believes his reputation and celebrity status will prove a
selling point to his fans, which will see them flock to buy items
that carry his name.
He continued: “Because, you know what, I want a bed that he makes,
I want a chair that he makes.”
It would be an unusual move for the Swedish flatpack company, who
have yet to collaborate with a celebrity, and only recently
announced it's first collaboration with a fashion designer, Katie
Eary.
Adidas signed Kanye in 2013 for a reported $10 million , with the
Yeezy line intended to boost sales in the U.S., where it has been
steadily losing ground to Nike and Under Armor.
However, despite the popularity of his highly sought-after Yeezy
footwear, Matt Powell, Vice President, Industry Analyst - Sports,
at the NPD Group told publication Marketing: "When I look at the
data, the Adidas growth is not coming from any styles even vaguely
associated with (Kanye) West. Sales have been negative most of the
time since West's signing."
