Iggy Azalea wants to erase 'crappy' 2015
Rapper Iggy Azalea wishes she had the power to erase 2015 from the annals of time.
The 25-year-old Australian became engaged in a host of controversial Twitter feuds with African-American hip-hop stars, like Azealia Banks, Snoop Dogg and Q-Tip, last year (15), and the conflicts haunt her to this day.
"If I could, I would Men in Black memory-erase 2015, I totally
would - that would be amazing!" she tells Elle Canada of her desire
to possess the same powers as the secret agents in Will Smith's
sci-fi movie.
Many members of the African-American community lashed out at Iggy,
accusing her of appropriating black culture, ignoring hip-hop
history and failing to speak out about significant social causes,
such as the Black Lives Matter movement.
But the Fancy hitmaker insists her public Twitter feuds with rap
rival Azealia have nothing to do with her political stance on
cultural issues affecting black people.
"Oh, God, there are so many things," she explains of why 2015 was
such a crap year for her. "I think the Azealia Banks thing is what
really started it all. We don't like each other on a personal
level, and that has gone on for many years - before the Black Lives
Matter incident happened.
"So when I dismissed her, people started to think that I dismissed
the whole movement, but I wasn't trying to dismiss Black Lives
Matter - I was trying to dismiss her because it's our personal
s**t. I don't think the subject matter of her tweet was invalid; I
just think it was emotionally charged and driven by something else,
and the whole thing got so misconstrued. I just wish I had
acknowledged the issue head-on because it made people think I don't
care about what's going on socially and what's happening in
America, and I do care.
"Even though I still hate Azealia Banks, I wish I had said it in a
way that didn't make people think I was oblivious to the
movement."
Iggy also regrets calling out a pizza delivery driver online after
he allegedly made her cell phone number public.
"And I wish I hadn't gotten into a fight with Papa John's!" she
adds.
