Diplo holds no grudges against M.I.A. for Rolling Stone outburst
Diplo holds no ill will against his ex-girlfriend M.I.A. after she blasted the dance music star for constantly criticising her work when she first broke into the charts, insisting "nothing she said is a lie".
The Paper Planes hitmaker, real name Mathangi Arulpragasam, hit headlines last month (Mar15) when she took aim at the DJ/producer in a candid Rolling Stone interview, accusing him of spoiling her big break by constantly putting her down.
M.I.A. said, "When I got signed by Interscope, he literally smashed
my hotel room and broke all the furniture because he was so angry I
got picked up by a major label and it was the corniest thing in the
world that could possibly happen...
"I wish I enjoyed it because I had this person on my shoulder the
whole time saying, 'It's s**t, it's s**t, it's s**t. You shouldn't
be on the charts. You shouldn't be in the magazines and you should
not be going to interviews. You should not be doing collaborations
with famous people. You should be an underground artist.'"
Diplo has now revealed he met M.I.A. the day after the magazine
interview was published and she apologised for her outburst, and he
holds no grudges because he knows he behaved badly.
He tells Billboard magazine, "I hadn't seen her in five years.
Nothing she said is a lie. I was really jealous and sad, and
probably mad when she signed to a major label. I had a lot of
control when we started, and I was really proud of the music we
made. The label promised her all these people to work with, and I
was like, 'But your thing is this.'"
Now Diplo admits he is eager to reunite with his ex in the studio
and make music with her and Skrillex for his electronic outfit
Major Lazer.
He says, "I probably made mistakes in our relationship, but we made
awesome music. Every time we had a fight, we made good music after.
I want to find a new artist I can fight with all the time and make
awesome songs with. That's Skrillex. We're thinking about doing
something for Major Lazer with her. She's so awesome still, and her
attitude is much better now."
Diplo and M.I.A. dated for five years until 2008. She went on to
enjoy a romance with multi-millionaire Benjamin Bronfman, the
father of her son Ikhyd, but they split in 2012.
Meanwhile, Diplo fathered two sons with Kathryn Lockhart and was
briefly linked to Katy Perry last year (14).
