Anton Yelchin's parents seek control of his estate

Late Anton Yelchin's parents have filed to seek control of his estate since the young actor did not leave a will.

The Star Trek star was killed in a freak car accident in June (16), when he was pinned between a brick pillar and his vehicle after it rolled backwards down the steep driveway of his home in San Fernando Valley, California.

On Monday (01Aug16), the 27 year old's parents, Irina and Viktor Yelchin, filed probate documents in Los Angeles County seeking to be named administrators of his estate since he left no will behind.

In the papers obtained by TMZ.com, Anton's estate totals around $1.4 million , including $731,000 in equity on his Los Angeles home and $641,000 in cash and personal property.

The news of the Yelchins' filing comes the same day it was revealed they are preparing to sue bosses at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the creators of the Jeep, among others, over the wrongful death of their son.

Soon after news of Anton's death surfaced, it was revealed his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee had been one of the 1.1 million cars recalled by manufacturers in April (16) over a fault with the gear shift, which makes drivers think their vehicle is in park when it's actually in neutral.

The family's attorney tells TMZ.com the Yelchins are seeking punitive damages "for the wrongful death of their son due to significant defects" in the vehicle, according to the publication.

Fiat Chrysler chiefs launched an investigation into Anton's incident following his headline-grabbing death, while they were hit with a class action lawsuit from fellow car owners days after the actor's accident.

Lawyers from consumer rights firm Hagens Berman Sobel Shapiro LLP filed a federal complaint on behalf of three plaintiffs - Deryl Wall, Justine Andollo, and Danielle and Joby Hackett - accusing executives at Fiat Chrysler of intentionally covering up fatal design flaws and deaths from the defects.

The Yelchins are planning to formally announce the lawsuit in a press conference with their attorney, Gary Dordick, in Los Angeles on Tuesday (02Aug16).
