When J. Balvin dropped his latest album Colores back in March, it was clear that Balvin had set out to bring something new to the reggaeton genre. Accompanying the album was a series of guided meditations in which Balvin reflected on his favorite colors, auras, and energies. It was something new and unexpected, but it’s obvious now that that’s just how Balvin likes to roll.
His innovation and momentum didn’t stop with just a bangin’ album and some tranquil thoughts. Balvin announced that he’d be releasing a music video for every track off of Colores, an ambitious endeavor for sure.
Fast-forward to now, and Balvin has released videos for 8 of the 10 tracks off the album. “Azul” is his latest video in the series, directed by Colin Tilley, and it is absolutely astounding. A 3-D animated short that’s doused in blue hues and electrifying visuals, “Azul” is refreshing and inventive and reshapes our expectations of music videos. Seriously, it is amazing.
In the video, we’ll find a cartoon version of a blue-haired Balvin falling in love with and having his heart broken by a life-size doll and imagining a world in which she is a real human being. It’s weird, with some Lars and the Real Girl vibes, but we’re totally here for it.
Plus, there’s an adorable animated dog as an added bonus.
It’s worth noting that the director, Colin Tilley, is kind of an icon himself, having directed videos for a ton of chart-topping artists like DJ Snake, Justin Bieber, Post Malone, Nicki Minaj, Future, Halsey, Jason Derulo, Anderson Paak… and that’s just a tiny sampling.
But his latest work with Balvin might be his most inventive yet. Between Balvin’s amazing songwriting and Tilley’s incredible direction, the sky is really the limit for these two, and we cannot wait to see what the remaining videos from Colores will look like!
