Disney is known for its classic animated films, ranging from romantic fairy tales like Cinderella to whimsical stories like Dumbo. Over the past two decades, they have attempted to bring back some of these works to a modern audience by turning our favorites into live-action remakes. Here are the top five examples where Disney has successfully retold the original story in a live-action format!
1. Beauty and the Beast
Starring Emma Watson as Belle, Beauty and the Beast depicts this classic fairytale in an ethereal and romantic manner that pulls us straight into this mystical world. The two lead actors carry their characters with more poise than any other live-action Disney actor, and the music is a refreshing balance between the original soundtrack and inclusions from the Broadway musical.
2. Mulan
The most recent of all the films on this list, Mulan utilized a primarily Chinese cast to most accurately tell a story set in traditional Chinese culture. Though many of the original songs were cut in the modern version, the choreography, beautiful backdrops, and talented performers make up for it.
3. The Lion King
Although there are no human actors in this film, given that its premise surrounds jungle animals, 2019’s The Lion King can still be considered a live-action adaptation because of its realistic CGI that puts you in the heart of the jungle. This is one of the only films on this list that is an exact shot-for-shot remake of the original, bringing back childhood memories for many.
4. Maleficent
Though Maleficent did not technically have her own animated movie, this 2014 film is a spin-off of the original Sleeping Beauty, showing a side of the villain that the fairytale never did. Angelina Jolie portrays the title character with so much depth and emotion, it is almost impossible not to sympathize with this antagonist. The first film received enough praise for Disney to release a sequel in 2019, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
5. Aladdin
This colorful take on the Middle Eastern romance often receives Will Smith’s portrayal of Genie as the most applaudable element from the original. Though the film is close to a shot-for-shot remake of the animated version, it adds tweaks to appeal better to newer audiences. The classic songs, such as "Prince Ali", make a return and, of course, so does the iconic magic carpet ride.
With Cruella, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and many other adaptations coming up on the release radar, Disney is sure to provide a fun, modern spin on some of our most beloved stories and characters!
