It’s already late-October, and Halloween is well on its way. Where did this year go?!
When I think of Halloween, I think of orange and black decorations, tons of chocolate, pumpkin carvings, corn mazes, and funny costumes. I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking forward to a cozy night in on the 31st, particularly with old Halloween movies that take me back to my childhood. If that’s what you’re looking for on this upcoming spooky night, here is a list of my three must-have childhood movies that you should pop in the DVD player!
Hocus Pocus (1993): Now this is a classic. After a few centuries, three witch sisters are resurrected in Salem, Massachusetts, on Halloween night. This time, they’ve got their eyes on immortal life and have turned their wrath on trick-or-treaters. It’s up to two teenagers -- a young girl, and a 300-year-old cat -- to put an end to the witches' reign of terror once and for all! My friends and I still talk about this movie to this day. All I see when thinking of this movie is Bette Midler’s crazy witch hair and big teeth!
Casper (1995): Casper the Friendly Ghost! Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty) is furious when her late father only willed her his gloomy-looking mansion rather than his millions of dollars. When she actually makes her way inside, she is scared away by mean ghosts. She has her eyes set on the fortune, so she hires an exorcist to get the ghosts out of the mansion and out of her way. Exorcist Dr. Harvey (Bill Pullman) and his daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) move into the house, and Kat soon meets cute little Casper! Aw, I can just hear his cute voice. However, Casper’s uncles, Stretch, Fatso, and Stinkie, are not so “friendly”, and it’s up to Kat and her dad to get the ghosts safely to the “other side”.
Disney’s Halloweentown (1998): Ah man, this has to be one of my favorites! I can just picture myself at 7 years old, watching the Disney Channel, counting down the minutes until this movie came on. Teenager Marnie learns that she’s a witch and has to finish her training soon or she will lose her powers forever! Her witch grandma Aggie (with her magic purse that can hold anything and everything) comes into town to train Marnie so she can help fight the evil that has taken over in Halloweentown. It did so well that they came out with three more installments of the movie. Talk about nostalgia!
So guys, I hope that brought you back to the early-'90s (best time ever) for a little while! This list is sure to give you an amazing holiday. These movies define not only Halloween but my dearly missed childhood.
Happy trick or treating!
